  • The Art Of Public Speaking

As a public speaker and communicator for the last twelve years I have learned some simple principles that will make anyone an effective communicator. The focus of this article is not on the preparation of the speech but on the delivery...the true art of public speaking. Someone once said that communication is 10% content and 90% delivery. You can have a beautifully written speech but if you don't capture the attention of the audience....it will not be effective. I will share with you the top five things to remember to master the art of public speaking .

The first principle inthe art of public speaking is to approach the podium approach with confidence. Keep your head up, have your speech in a folder or notebook, and place the notebook on the podium.

The second principle in the art of public speaking is to make eye contact with the crowd and smile. Don't make comments such as..."Wow there are a lot of people here tonight", or "Gosh those lights are sure bright." That communicates to people that you are nervous and unsure. Get right to the point. Your head is up, you smile and you say with confidence..."Good evening. Thank you for the opportunity to speak with you tonight."

The third principle in the art of public speaking is...don't read your notes word for word. You should have memorized at least the outline of your speech. You should be comfortable enough that you do not have to depend 100% on your notes. The art of public speaking is about connecting with people and reading to the crowd loses any connection you have established.

The fourth principle inthe art of public speaking is to step away from the podium. This communciates confidence and helps you connect even more with the audience. The best time to do this is when you are at a place in your speech that you aren't tied to your notes. Personal stories are a great time to do this and a great way to connect with your audience. Be sure that the microphone allows you to do this. A stationary mic will limt your ability to move across the stage.

The fifth principle in the art of public speaking is to communicate your message with passion. Let the people know that you are excited about your message...the information you have. It makes them want to listen and get what you already have. The art of public speaking means we do not use a monotone voice. Enthusiasm is contagious and we want the audience to see your enthusiasm and catch your vision.
